Arne Quinze: Rock Strangers at the Statue of Liberty
Belgian conceptual artist Arne Quinze is currently taking part in the "Green Box Project", an event-driven, augmented-reality campaign for Beck's, launched by Anheuser-Busch InBev, which mixes public art with mobile technology.
A 200-foot high digital sculpture was unveiled on top of the flame of the Statue of Liberty, New York City on the of 4th July - Independence Day – to mark the launch of the Beck’s Green Box Project. Rock Strangers, created by Belgian artist Arne Quinze, marked both the launch of the Beck’s Green Box Project, the world’s first Augmented Reality Gallery and the Beck’s Art Fund.
Here's how the augmented-reality effect works: Green boxes measuring 6.5 feet cubed will be placed in spots in London, Miami, Milan, New York, Rome and elsewhere. There is actually nothing in the box. Rather, passersby are directed to download a special mobile application to their smartphones. When pointed at the boxes, the app will reveal art. (A-B InBev said the boxes will be clearly marked as a promotion, to avoid raising suspicions by pedestrians.)
