25 years of foreign policy: the strength of international cooperation

On December 10, the Flanders Department of Foreign Affairs organized the conference '25 years of Flemish Foreign Policy ', looking back on various highlights and achievements of Flemish foreign policy. At the same time, discussions were held on  the future role of foreign policy, in and outside Flanders.

"Today, more than ever, we have to work together internationally to tackle challenges such as Brexit and the pressure on multilateralism ", said Minister-president Geert Bourgeois in his opening speech.

Together with Secretary-General Bynens, he looked back on the 25-year 'foreign career' of Flanders. Many treaties were signed, including with all Central and Eastern European countries, with neighboring countries Germany, France and the Netherlands, but also with countries outside Europe such as Chile and South Africa. In addition, many Memoranda of Understanding were negociated and a worldwide diplomatic network was set up with 12 General Representatives and more than 100 economic representatives.

During thematic panel discussions, the role of foreign policy in the future was looked at. The panels, which have been led by a Flemish minister and a General representative, dealt with the themes circular economy, mobility and industry 4.0.

Jan Peumans, Chairman of the Flemish Parliament, and Rik Daems, Chairman of the Foreign Policy Committee of the Flemish Parliament, concluded the conference with a lecture on the impact of international parliamentary diplomacy.
