Born and raised in Belgium, Bart Michiels moved to NYC after studying at the St. Lucas School for Arts in Brussels and receiving a BA in Photography. A few years after his arrival in the States, Bart embarked on some of his first long term personel projects, of which Riverworks was awarded The Project Competition's First Prize in 1995.
More recently, while unfinished, The Course of History, a body of work about the crossroads of landscape, history, and memory, was selected for the Art and Commerce Festival in 2004. He became a finalist for the Santa Fe Prize for Photography in 2006. His work is represented by Foley Gallery in New York, and collected by several private collectors and museums.
