
Screening 'Bullhead' at NYU: The New Wave in Cinema
Bullhead is an emotionally driven tale of revenge, redemption and fate set against the backdrop of the Belgian bovine growth hormone mafia. The story starts with young cattle farmer Jacky Vanmarsenille (Matthias Schoenaerts) who is approached by an unscrupulous veterinarian to make a shady deal with a notorious beef trader. But the assassination of a federal policeman and an unexpected confrontation with a mysterious secret from Jacky’s past set in motion a chain of events with far-reaching consequences.
Bullhead was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Foreign Language Film in 2012.
Introduction by Sonja Simonyi and Jaap Verheul in which they will focus on the audiovisual policy and the success of Flanders Image/Screen Flanders. Sonja Simonyi will present the representation of Flanders in the movie Bullhead. The movie will be screened after the introduction and will be followed by a reception.
Sonja Simonyi is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Cinema Studies at New York University. Her research interests include postwar Eastern European cinema and the representation of Eastern Europe in film.
Jaap Verheul is a PhD Candidate in Cinema Studies (ABD) at New York University, where his dissertation focuses on popular European cinema as it chronicles the dynamics between European audiovisual policy and regional and national filmmaking in the European Union today. He received his BA in Media and Culture from the University of Amsterdam (2007) and his MA in Cinema Studies from New York University (2009).
